DORSET COUPLE PHOTOGRAPHER

Natural Couple Portraits Across Dorset

Relaxed, documentary-led couple photography across Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset, shaped by the two of you and wherever we decide to go.

Based in Bournemouth, I photograph couples throughout the county, from the coast and the harbour to woodland, heath and open countryside. With more than 25 years behind the camera, I know how much a place shapes the feel of a shoot, and how to photograph it at its best.

THE EXPERIENCE

Relaxed, Unhurried and More Fun Than You Expect

Most couples arrive slightly unsure, and almost everyone says the same thing: that they are not good in front of a camera. It matters far less than you would think.

There is no list of shots to work through and nothing to perform. We walk, we talk, we explore wherever we have chosen, and the photographs come from what happens along the way. The best of them almost always arrive in the in-between moments, when nobody is thinking about the camera at all.

Some couples are quick and tactile. Others are quieter, and funnier than they let on. Usually one of you is more comfortable than the other, which is completely normal. I watch how you are together and work with that, rather than imposing something that isn’t you.

Nothing awkward. Nothing forced.

WHERE WE GO

Somewhere That Suits the Two of You

The coast is the obvious choice and often the right one. Sandbanks and Shell Bay for open sand, Studland for dunes and space, Hengistbury Head for heathland and clifftop paths. There is more on coastal shoots on my beach and coastal portrait page.

Inland is usually quieter and just as good. The parkland and walled garden at Upton Country Park, the beech avenue and open fields around Badbury Rings and Kingston Lacy near Wimborne, the formal gardens at Compton Acres, the heath and woodland out at Arne, or Bournemouth’s Victorian gardens early in the day before anyone is about.

If there is already a place that means something to you, we can make that part of the shoot. It might be somewhere you walk regularly, where you first met, or simply a place you return to time and again. Personal significance matters, but so does the way a location photographs, so I’ll help you make the most of it, taking into account the light, the surroundings and how busy it is at the time we shoot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Couple Photography FAQs

We're not photogenic. Is that a problem?
Almost everyone says this, including people who photograph beautifully. You will not be stood in front of a hedge and told to smile. We walk, we talk and explore, and most couples forget the camera is there almost straight away.
What should we wear?
Simple and comfortable, in colours that sit together without matching exactly. Texture photographs better than pattern. If you’re unsure, send me what you’re thinking beforehand and I’ll happily advise.
What if the weather turns?
Soft cloud often gives the most beautiful light. If conditions are genuinely poor we simply rearrange, usually decided a day or two beforehand.
Can we bring the dog?
Yes. If they’re part of your life together, they belong in the photographs.
We're getting married. Is this the right shoot?
Possibly not. Have a look at my pre-wedding and engagement shoots, which are included within my wedding collections and built around the run-up to your day.
