These are the occasions people genuinely treasure. A significant birthday. A ruby or golden anniversary. A retirement after decades of hard work. The kind of gathering where toasts are made, old stories are told, and the room fills with people who have known each other for years.

I love documenting them. Private celebrations sit within my wider event photography work, but they have a quality all of their own. They have a different rhythm to many of the events I photograph, often feeling more relaxed, more personal, and more rooted in long-standing relationships. My role is to be present without being intrusive, to notice what is really happening rather than direct it, and to give you a record of the day that reflects how it genuinely felt.

Private events take many forms. Some are large and lively, held at hotels or dedicated venues. Others are more intimate, thirty people around a long table at home or in a garden on a warm evening. The scale rarely matters. What matters is the connection between the people there, and those are the moments worth preserving well.

A documentary approach

Twenty-five years in photojournalism has shaped the way I work: observe first, photograph second. At a celebration, that means moving through the room quietly and staying close to what is unfolding rather than shaping it. A conversation across the table. A reaction during a speech nobody expected. Three generations of the same family at the end of the night, all in the same room.

If you’d like group photographs alongside the candid coverage, those can be arranged around the flow of the event. A small number of organised shots works well at most celebrations, and usually takes far less time than people expect.

Venues across Bournemouth, Sandbanks and Dorset

Private celebrations in this part of the world happen in genuinely varied settings. Along the Bournemouth seafront, events regularly take place at the Hilton, the Highcliff Marriott and the Hermitage Hotel. On the Sandbanks peninsula, there are birthday dinners at the Sandbanks Hotel with the harbour on one side and the sea on the other, evenings at the Royal Motor Yacht Club overlooking Poole Harbour, and gatherings at some of the private homes on the peninsula itself.

Further into Dorset, celebrations move to country restaurants, farm estates, village halls and gardens that open up beautifully in summer. Each setting brings its own light and its own character. Twenty-five years of photographing across all of them means the variables rarely present a problem.

How it works

Before the event, I’ll ask about the flow of the day, the timings, the key people, and whether there are any particular moments you’d especially like covered. That helps me plan the photography in a way that supports the event naturally, without affecting how it unfolds.

On the day, I’ll arrive at the agreed time and photograph the event as it develops. The images are then carefully edited and delivered to a private online gallery, usually within a week. The gallery link can be shared with family and guests if you’d like others to be able to view the photographs.

Coverage can be arranged for a few hours or for the full event. If you’re not sure what would suit the occasion best, I’m happy to advise once I know a little more about what you’re planning.

Questions worth answering

How many hours do I need?

It depends on the occasion. A dinner with speeches typically needs three to four hours. A full afternoon and evening celebration with arrivals, a meal and dancing will need longer. Once you know the rough shape of the day, it’s usually straightforward to work out what makes sense.

What about low light and evening venues?

Many celebrations happen in dimly lit restaurants, private dining rooms or evening venues. That’s not a problem. I work with available light wherever it’s sufficient and use discreet supplementary lighting where it’s needed, keeping the atmosphere intact.

Will guests be aware of a photographer?

Rarely, after the first few minutes. People settle into the occasion quickly, and when they do, the photographs that follow are the ones worth having.

Are group shots included?

Yes. A combination of candid coverage and a small number of organised photographs works well at most celebrations. These take far less time than most people expect and can be fitted around the natural rhythm of the event.

When will I receive the photographs?

Usually within a week. Everything is edited and delivered to a private gallery. You can download the full set and share the link with family and guests so they can access the images directly.

Do you cover events outside Bournemouth and Dorset?

Most of my private celebration work is based across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the wider Dorset area, with regular coverage extending into Hampshire. For celebrations further afield, get in touch and I’ll confirm availability.
