Pre-Wedding & Engagement Shoots in Dorset

Relaxed, natural photography before your wedding day

A pre-wedding shoot changes how your wedding day feels in front of the camera.

I include a pre-wedding shoot within my core wedding collections as your Dorset wedding photographer because it genuinely makes a difference. It gives you a chance to experience how I work, see how relaxed it all feels, and get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day.

Pre-wedding and couples shoots are also available to book separately across Bournemouth, Poole and the wider Dorset coast.

Why Book a Pre-Wedding Shoot?

Most couples tell me they feel slightly unsure about being photographed. That’s completely normal. A pre-wedding or engagement shoot gives you space to relax and see that you don’t need to perform for the camera.

What most couples find is that very little direction is needed. Natural light does most of the work, interaction matters more than posing, and the best images tend to happen in the quieter, in-between moments.

By the time your wedding day arrives, you’re not thinking about the camera at all. You already know how it feels, and that confidence shows in the photographs.

If you’re booking a standalone engagement shoot, you’ll leave with natural, honest photographs that reflect your relationship without anything feeling staged.

“We knew when we met Paul at the pre-wedding shoot that he was going to be just what we wanted on our wedding day. Paul immediately put us at ease. His manner, humour and energy brought out the best in us and into the photos.”

– Louise & Q

Included Within My Core Wedding Collections

A pre-wedding shoot is included within my main wedding collections. And most couples schedule their shoot around three to six months before the wedding, once plans are taking shape but before the final run-up begins. It gives us time to choose a location that suits you and work with the season, rather than squeezing it in at the last minute.

“The pre-wedding photo shoot was the perfect way for us to get comfortable with the camera, laugh a lot and work out what worked best for us.”

– Alice & Tom

What Happens During the Shoot?

If your pre-wedding shoot is included within your wedding coverage, midweek dates are available and held locally to me around Bournemouth and Poole.

We choose a location along the coast, in woodland, or open green spaces where you can walk, explore, and simply be yourselves without anything feeling forced or uncomfortable. Shoots are relaxed with time to talk and last around 30 minutes, with extended options also available.

Every shoot unfolds differently because every couple’s chemistry is different. Some are naturally tactile and dynamic together. Others are less physically expressive but connect just as deeply through conversation or shared humour. Usually one of you will be more comfortable with the camera than the other – that’s completely normal.

I observe how you naturally interact and adapt to your energy. Some couples respond to playful, energetic direction – we bounce off each other and create something dynamic. Others prefer calm, composed moments. Some want expressive, affectionate photographs; others something more understated. After photographing 600+ couples over two decades, I read what feels natural for you and work with that rather than imposing a fixed style.

That’s what makes your photographs feel genuinely like you, not a performance of someone else’s idea of romance. There’s nothing to prepare or perform; your personality and chemistry lead the way, and we build the shoot around that together.

If you’d prefer a different Dorset location such as Durdle Door, Kimmeridge Bay or further along the Jurassic Coast, that’s absolutely possible. A supplement fee applies to cover the additional travel and time involved.

Available to Book Separately

Pre-wedding and engagement shoots are also available as standalone sessions across Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset.

A standalone shoot makes sense if you want professional engagement photographs, you’re planning a proposal, need images for stationery, or simply want natural photographs together.

Standalone sessions are from £275 and include a 60-minute on-location shoot, professional editing, a private online gallery, and high-resolution digital files.

Other Dorset locations are available, along with extended shoot options.

Where to Have Your Pre-Wedding Shoot in Dorset

Most shoots take place along the Dorset coastline, where open space and natural light help everything feel relaxed.

I regularly photograph across the county, so I can suggest locations that suit the season, the light and the atmosphere you’re drawn to.

Popular options include:

Hengistbury Head for coastal paths, open heathland and sweeping views

Sandbanks for clean shoreline and minimal, uncluttered backdrops

Studland Beach and Studland Bay for softer dunes and wide, open space

Old Harry Rocks for dramatic cliffs and expansive sea views

Durdle Door if you’re drawn to something iconic and striking

Clifftop views near St Aldhelm’s Head for elevated, cinematic scenery

Kimmeridge Bay for rugged rock formations and a more secluded feel

Each location offers something slightly different. Some feel expansive and cinematic, others more intimate and restrained. The key is choosing somewhere that reflects you rather than simply choosing the most recognisable landmark.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should we wear?

Most couples choose simple, comfortable clothing in neutral tones that work naturally along the Dorset coastline. Think layers for changeable weather, and footwear suitable for uneven coastal paths if we’re heading to clifftops or beaches.

What if the weather isn’t great?

Soft cloud often creates beautiful light. If conditions are extreme, we simply reschedule.

Can we bring our dog?

Yes. If they’re part of your life together, they’re welcome.
