Poole, Sandbanks and Studland sit along one of the most beautiful stretches of the Dorset coast. Open sand, pine-topped cliffs, sheltered harbour water, dunes and heathland all lie within a few minutes of each other. For natural portrait photography, it is hard to think of a better setting.

I have photographed this coastline for more than 25 years. Working across the whole bay, I create relaxed coastal portraits for families, couples and individuals, with each shoot shaped around the people in front of the camera. Lightly directed, unhurried and completely personal to you.

The coast gives a portrait shoot something a studio never can. Space to move, changing light off the water, and a backdrop that shifts as you walk. Children relax when they have room to run. Couples settle when it feels more like a walk than a photography session. It suits almost everyone.

The approach is calm, lightly guided and natural. I watch for the moments in between, help when direction is needed, and let the location do some of the work. The result is a collection of photographs that feel like you, in a place you will recognise for years to come.

Where I shoot

The places I know best.

Having photographed this coast for years, I know which parts work best at different times of day, where the light lasts longest, where the beaches stay quietest, and which locations suit young children, couples or larger family groups. Sandbanks. Clean, open sand with some of the best evening light anywhere on the Dorset coast. The harbour is only a short walk away, giving two very different backdrops in one session. Spacious, uncluttered and ideal for relaxed family portraits, couples and individual shoots.

Studland, Knoll Beach, Middle Beach & Shell Bay. Reached by the Sandbanks Chain Ferry, Studland offers National Trust dunes, heathland and wide sandy beaches with views towards Old Harry Rocks. It’s quieter than the town beaches and feels much more natural, particularly outside the summer holidays. Shell Bay is especially beautiful around low tide when the beach opens out.

Branksome & Canford Cliffs. The pine-lined chines and quieter stretches of sand give these beaches a more sheltered feel. The combination of woodland paths, cliffs and beach creates plenty of variety without travelling far.

Poole Harbour, Whitecliff & Evening Hill. If you prefer the water without a sandy beach, Poole Harbour offers boats, jetties, harbour views and a softer coastal atmosphere. Whitecliff Park and Evening Hill are particularly lovely around sunset, overlooking the harbour towards Brownsea Island.

Hengistbury Head & Mudeford. One of the most varied locations on the Dorset coast. Open heathland, clifftop paths, harbour views, sandy beaches and the famous beach huts stretching towards Mudeford Sandbank all sit within walking distance of each other. It offers enough variety for an entire portrait session in one location.

Bournemouth Seafront. For a classic Bournemouth backdrop, the seafront combines wide beaches, colourful beach huts, the Victorian gardens and the pier. Early mornings and evenings are usually the quietest times, particularly during the summer.

Choosing the right location

Every part of the Poole coastline has its own character. Some families love the open space at Sandbanks, others prefer the quieter dunes at Studland or the harbour views around Whitecliff and Evening Hill. Before the session, I’ll recommend locations based on the time of year, the light, the tide and the type of photographs you’re hoping to create, so the location is chosen around you, not the other way round.

Light & tides

The best light on the beach

Early morning and the hour before sunset provide the softest light and the quietest beaches. Golden hour across Sandbanks and Studland is often the most beautiful light of the day, especially when the sun drops across the harbour.

The tides also make a difference. Around Shell Bay and the Studland shoreline, low tide reveals far more sand and creates a greater sense of space. Every season works well here, and winter often produces some of the clearest, most directional light of the year.
