Vue Cinema Beach Day, Poole | Event Photography
Written by Paul Underhill commercial event photographer | Documentary coverage of public brand activations, corporate commissions and live events across Poole, Bournemouth and the wider UK
Vue Cinema’s Beach Day Takeover at Tower Retail Park, Poole brought a full beach club setup to one of Dorset’s busiest retail locations. Parasols, branded signage, a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream cart, fairground games and a Bluey character appearance turned the cinema forecourt into a family event on a Thursday morning in August.
I was commissioned by London creative agency Tigerbond to document the event on behalf of Vue. The brief included exterior crowd coverage, character interaction, foyer retail areas, and a setup shot inside the screen with families. The shoot ran from eleven until one. Outside, the public arrived in their own time and moved freely between the different activities. The Bluey meet-and-greet was the only fixed part of the day.

Photographing a Live Brand Experience
Commercial event photography for a public-facing activation like this brings different demands from a conference or private function. There is no running order, no predictable flow, and no second chance at the moments that matter.
The coverage needed a documentary approach throughout, reading the crowd and anticipating moments as they happened.
Vue’s brief also required branding to be present and legible in as many images as possible. Every photograph was made with that in mind.
The Exterior Setup
The forecourt was styled with a clear beach club aesthetic, with parasols, themed props, branded wafers alongside the Ben and Jerry’s cart, and Vue signage throughout the entrance area. Families arrived steadily from the start. Children headed straight for the hook-a-duck and claw machines, while parents joined the queue for ice cream.
Wide crowd shots established the scale and energy of the event. Tighter frames of the games, ice cream being served and enjoyed, and close details of the props and branded elements helped build a fuller picture of the morning.
The Bluey Appearance
The Bluey character appearance created the longest queue of the morning and produced some of the most useful images of the day. Parents crouched down with phones out, photographing their children meeting the character. Children reacted instantly, with the kind of unguarded expressions that make these moments especially strong.
Covering a character appearance at a public event requires careful positioning, patience, and the ability to anticipate where the action is heading. Getting clean frames that show both the character and the audience interaction, with Vue branding still in view, is never accidental.
Inside the Cinema and Foyer
After the exterior coverage, the shoot moved inside. A setup shot in the screen with families helped show the wider Vue experience beyond the forecourt activity. From there, the focus moved through the foyer retail areas in detail, including the popcorn wall, drinks pouring wall, pick-and-mix counter, nachos and hotdog wall, coffee area and self-service checkouts.
Inside, the focus shifted towards the atmosphere of the cinema itself, with the lit machines, counters and downlighting giving the space a darker, more immersive feel.
