Highcliffe Castle Wedding Reception in Dorset – Ellen & Will
Written by Paul Underhill, a Dorset wedding photographer based in Bournemouth.
Location: Highcliffe Castle, Dorset | Season: Summer
Photographic approach: Documentary-led wedding photography with subtle editorial portrait direction
Highcliffe Castle is one of the most distinctive wedding venues on the Dorset coast. With sea views, wide lawns and the Great Hall at its centre, it gives couples openness and architectural presence in one setting.
Ellen and Will arrived from their ceremony at Christchurch Priory to a terrace already alive with music and conversation. Guests gathered outside while a live band played in the Wintergarden room, setting the tone before the evening unfolded.
As a Dorset wedding photographer this is the kind of reception that shows how well Highcliffe Castle handles energy. Around one hundred guests feels vibrant but never crowded. There’s room for interaction, reaction and movement without losing atmosphere.
.
Wintergarden Speeches
Before dinner, the bride’s speech took place in the airy Wintergarden room. It shifted the mood instantly. What had been light and social outside became focused and emotional inside.
There were loud cheers, sharp banter and proper laughter, followed by quiet moments that caught people off guard. Tears, long glances across the room, hands reaching for one another. The light in the Wintergarden keeps the room feeling open, even as the speeches turn more personal.
A Great Hall Entrance
When it was time to move into the Great Hall, the energy lifted again. Ellen and Will entered to a wall of cheering, guests waving napkins overhead, the kind of entrance that feels spontaneous rather than staged.
The hall is large, but it never feels distant. You can still read every reaction. Speeches continued in the same spirit, lively, funny, occasionally emotional, with the sound of applause bouncing off the stone.
A Five Minute Pause
During a natural break in the speeches, Ellen and Will stepped outside for five or six minutes of fresh air. No announcement, no audience. Just the two of them.
We stayed close to the terrace. The backdrop did the work. They just had to be in it.
A quiet exchange. A sudden laugh. A playful turn as they walked back towards the doors.
It was brief and unforced. When they returned inside, the room lifted again without missing momentum.
From First Dance to Full Disco
Dinner gave way to cake cutting and a first dance that drew everyone in. Not long after, Ellen changed into a party dress, ready for the night to properly take off.
Friends took over DJ duties, bringing in funky London beats that transformed the Great Hall into a packed dance floor. Arms in the air, shoes kicked off, no hesitation.
By the end of the evening it felt less like a formal reception and more like a packed house party.
Loud, joyful and completely theirs.
Highcliffe Castle as a Reception Venue
For couples planning their celebration here, the terrace, Wintergarden and Great Hall each bring something different.
Open-air drinks outside. Speeches in the light-filled Wintergarden. A loud entrance into the Great Hall, followed by a packed dance floor once the lights drop. The variety keeps the celebration moving without ever feeling disconnected.
Located close to Bournemouth and the wider Dorset coast, Highcliffe Castle remains one of the most versatile reception venues in the area.
