Christchurch Priory Wedding in Dorset – Ellen & Will
Written by Paul Underhill, a Dorset wedding photographer based in Bournemouth, photographing wedding across Dorset and the South Coast.
Location: Christchurch Priory, Christchurch, Dorset | Season: Summer
Photographic approach: Documentary-led wedding photography with natural portrait direction
Christchurch Priory is one of the most recognisable church wedding venues in Dorset. Its scale, history and soft interior light create a setting that feels both grand and intimate. For Ellen and Will, it was the perfect place to marry, with the morning unfolding along Christchurch Quay before the ceremony began.
As a Dorset wedding photographer based near Bournemouth, I often photograph weddings across Christchurch and the surrounding coast. The combination of historic architecture and the quay nearby makes it particularly special for couples planning a traditional church wedding.

Morning Preparations in Christchurch
Christchurch Priory is one of the most recognisable church wedding venues in Dorset, but on Ellen and Will’s day it felt anything but formal. There was energy from the start.
The morning began along Christchurch Quay. Will and the groomsmen met for breakfast at The Boathouse, easing into the day rather than rushing it. Ellen got ready at The King’s Arms Hotel on Castle Street, just a short walk from the church. That proximity makes a real difference in Christchurch. There’s no long car journey, no pressure on timings, just a relaxed start to the day.
Walking to Christchurch Priory
Seven bridesmaids walked ahead of Ellen through the castle grounds towards the Priory, bouquets up, laughter carrying as they went. It felt unhurried and natural, which suited the day perfectly.
Inside the Priory, the long aisle gives the entrance room to unfold properly. As Ellen walked with her father, the atmosphere shifted. The stone arches frame the moment, but what stood out most was her dad’s expression. A mix of pride and emotion, quietly written all over his face.
Ceremony at Christchurch Priory
The Priory has a softness to the light that works brilliantly for documentary wedding photography. Expressions stay clear, even deep in the nave, and the focus stays on people rather than distraction.
During the ceremony, reactions moved through the rows. Guests leaning forward, smiling, wiping away tears. It felt heartfelt and properly present, with that sense of everyone being in it together.
Confetti Outside the Priory
After the service, the energy lifted again. Guests gathered outside the main doors for confetti, filling the space between the stone walls with colour and movement. The exit felt joyful and rowdy, petals in the air and excitement all around.
Portraits by Christchurch Quay and Boat Farewell
From the Priory, everyone made their way down to the quay. Ellen and Will paused by the water for a moment, boats behind them, taking it all in before stepping aboard.
When they stepped onto the boat, guests lined the edge of the quay and waved them off. It was one of those moments that doesn’t need directing. Arms raised, voices carrying across the water.
