Landscape-inspired portrait session with an editorial brief in Dorset

A recent commission for a well-known travel writer at The Telegraph gave me the opportunity to create a set of professional portraits with an editorial edge. The brief was to capture creative, location-based shots that felt polished but natural, professional without being stiff, and with a sense of story.

We worked across Bournemouth and Poole, using the local landscape in a way that didn’t feel obviously local. The aim was to make each image look like it could have been captured anywhere in the world. Timeless, editorial, and refined.

Location & Style

As a Poole portrait photographer, I’m often commissioned to work in familiar spaces but create something that feels elevated and unique. For this shoot, we made careful use of both seascape and landscape, choosing locations that offered texture, soft tones, and a sense of openness, without being tied to a recognisable spot.

We shot in the early evening for the best natural light, using shallow depth of field to create a soft, focused look that fits with the magazine’s house style. The images needed to work within a specific editorial layout, so framing, tone and format were all carefully considered throughout.

Creative Approach

Portraits like these are instinctive. It’s about reading the light, connecting with the person in front of the camera, and creating a calm space where natural expression can come through.

The overall style was unfussy, relaxed and high-end. A blend of environmental portraiture and editorial photography, made to work across national press and digital platforms alike.
